Auto Calculate switches to manual

Excel 2003: I never change spreadsheets to calculate manualy, yet sometimes I
notice that calculation are not automaticaly calculating. Sure enough, I
check the Calculations option and it has switched to manual. How does this
happen? What can be done to stop it?
