auto close on save not working

When I make changes to a document, Word is no longer prompting me to save the
changes when I close the application. I have tried uninstalling and
reinstalling the application, applying all updates, replacing normal.dot...
nothing seems to solve the problem. I have background saves and autorecover
turned on in the options, and the auto_close macro appears to be present.

Can anyone tell me if there is something else that might be causing this
problem? I am particularly worried since uninstalling and reinstalling Word
did not correct the issue.
