auto-close problem

I use Excel workbooks("client" book hereafter) with an
auto-close macro which requests a follow-up date and
accesses another workbook ("follow-up" book) to record it.
Since upgrading from OS 9 to OS X 10.3 the procedure will
only work if I save the client book before closing (which I
often omit to do, usually when I have made no material
changes). If I leave it to the system to prompt me for a
save, I get the following:
1. The auto-close message-box appears and is responded to,
the follow-up record is updated and the auto-close macro
terminates.
2. The follow-up book remains on show, hiding the
still-open client book and the "save/don't save" prompt.
3. On returning to the client book and replying to the
"save/don't save" prompt, the auto-close routine kicks in
for a second time and is again completed.
4.The follow-up book is now visible but inaccessible to any
further actions. The only way I have found to get out of
this is to force-quit Excel and restart.
The follow-up book presumably thinks it has some unfinished
business with the client book auto-close routine. Any ideas
how I can get over this?

I omitted to mention that I upgraded at the same time from
an older version of Excel to Excel 2004 - probably more
relevent than the system upgrade!

It's hard to tell without seeing your code. The puzzling thing is that
it apparently worked with an OS9 version of XL.

Could you post your auto-close macro?

Alternatively, I'd be willing to take a look at your workbook if you
wish to send it to me. Make sure you zip or stuff it first, and send it
from the email account above (to get past my filters).
