Auto Complete NK2 inconsistently storing names/addresses

We have a device here that is very inconsistent with the information stored
in the NK2 file. For example - last Wednesday my name auto-completed fine.
Today it's not there. This is happening randomly and sporadically for this
user (unfortunately, he's a senior exec -- I bet you all knew that was
coming!)! Names will be there for a period of time and then disappear; other
times it doesn't stay through one close/open of Outlook.

I've tried deleting the *.NK2 so a new one would be generated -- same issue.
I've tried generating a new e-mail profile -- same issue. I've tried
running ProcMon to see if it had trouble writing the nk2 file when closing
Outlook ... the log said it was successful (but it obviously wasn't since the
name didn't stay)...

I'd like to avoid a new OS profile (documents and settings\username) and or
complete uninstall/reinstall of Office/Outlook 2003 SP3 if possible.

Any other suggestions/thoughts?
Thanks!
Michelle

when names don't stick between reboots either the profile is corrupt or
outlook isn't closing cleanly. so... look in tasks manager, processes tab
to verify outlook.exe is not running after its closed. If its not running,
rename the nk2 file and restart outlook. if the clean file doesn't help
you'll need a new profile. reinstalling is unlikely to fix this.

if outlook is running, you'll need to fix that problem before you do
anything else - most common cause is a pda keeping the file open.

Thanks for the quick response Diane. We were watching the outlook.exe
process to ensure it closed. It did -- and ProcMon traces showed a
successful write to the *.nk2 file. We did generate a new e-mail profile and
it had the same issues.

This afternoon, I broke down and generated him a new OS profile (documents &
settings\username) ... keeping my fingers crossed that this fixes it!

If not - I'm fresh outta' ideas (unless others have things I can try) and
will probably suggest a complete rebuild (even though this issue started
because of a complete rebuild!)!

Thanks again!
