auto correct not working

Here's my problem: I cannot get Auto Correct to work in a
protected document with form fields. It will correct to
only 4 characters. Auto Correct works just fine in an
unprotected document. I didn't have any troubles with
Auto Correct 4 years ago (and prior), but then I was out
of the workplace for 3 years, and now that I'm back and
need to use Auto Correct again, it's not working. So I
don't know when it decided to quit.

Any solutions?

I'm using Windows98 and Word2000.
