Auto-Correct Smart Button will not disappear

I have unchecked the "Show AutoCorrect smart button" box, but I still get the AutoCorrect Options "lightning" pop-up when autocorrect kicks in. I've tried restarting Word. Any thoughts?

Don't rush out just yet Clive. I have 2008 too...

So, why does Bob's work and mine doesn't?

Thanks, Bob (I don't have 2008 yet).

"Buy Office 2008 to aid your anger management" ... ;-)

I don't think I would recommend it for that purpose. Using it could
actually cause high blood pressure and strokes to things left out. ;-)

If it's "fixed", don't "break it"!

Right off I can't be sure. I've done nothing "special" to get it to stick,
though, so there must be something local to your installation that's making
it not work.

Which version of OS X & what type of Mac?

Does the box remain checked when you go back to Prefs or does it get
cleared? Have you restarted your Mac rather than just re-launching Word? Do
you have any 3rd party helper apps or virus software running?

Have you noticed any other Pref settings not behaving correctly?

This may seem silly, but are you sure you have turned off
Word>Preferences>Autocorrect>Show Autocorrect smart button?

I am sure you've already done that...

Cheers

OK, so, does anyone have an answer to my original question?

To answer the above...

-Yes, the correct box is unchecked it remains unchecked, after Word, restart and computer restart
-No 3rd party helper apps that I know of
-OS X 10.4.11, Macbook 2GHz C2D
-No other prefs behaving badly that I can see

It's like Word is saying, "Yeah, I see it, but screw you! I'm not gonna do it." :D

Well, it sounds like there is a problem with the prefs file - even though
you're not seeing other evidence of it. Let's try this:

While no Office apps are running locate the file;

~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.Word.plist

Drag it to your Desktop, then launch Word. It will create a new file (so
startup may take a moment longer than usual), then see whether the setting
will hold. If so, you can delete the old .plist file & you should be good to
go. If the problem persists it could be the result of having a prior version
of Word installed before installing 2008. In that case, follow the "If
testing these files..." suggestions you'll find here:

k, that appears to have worked. I'll have to test it out some more, but a quick "teh" changed to "the" seemed fine. Thanks

I'm using Word 2004 for the Mac. There is no AutoCorrect option in the Prefs panel, so I can't turn it off. Now I can turn off the PasteOptions so why not AutoCorrect? And like Clive, I use AutoCorrect A LOT....

Had you read the entire thread you would have been able to answer your own
question... Word 2004 *does not* have the option to turn it off. That was
added in 2008. I'm sorry, but if the option isn't programmed into the
software there isn't anything we can do to change it:)

Honestly, how hard is it for the Mac BU to get this right? No sooner do I apply 12.0.1 that the AutoCorrect button is back and unchecking "show" has no effect. Am I going to have to trash com.microsoft.Word.plist every time I update Word? This is just ridiculous. Disappointing product becoming more so by the day. Looks like Apple + MacBU = sloppy.

OK, there's a bit of clarification. The AutoCorrect button only seems to be popping up for AutoFormat actions (not things like "teh"). Can't find a way to turn it off or dismiss it and trashin prefs file is useless. This behavior is new with 12.0.1 (for me). This specific instance is about auto-indent (which I want on but about which I do NOT wish to be notified (I can see it myself for Pete's sake)).
