auto correct

How do I use auto correct to type 3-year-old and have the "-" back space up
to the number? Right now I have it as "yo" as the replace text and
"-year-old" as the with text but there is a space between the number and
hyphen.

Use non breaking HYPHEN CTRL SHIFT - (hyphen) so type:

3-year-old/ (yes use a backslash quite good) block the text go to
AutoCorrect and save as
3y/ (yes 3y /)
now type 3y/ (take a SPACEBAR space) and hey presto!

Marie was telling us:
Marie nous racontait que :

To expand on Rose's idea...

In the "Replace:" area type "/yo" (without the quotes).
In the "With:" area type "-year-old" (without the quotes).

Now, in your text, type "5/yo[Spacebar]" and you will get "5-year-old".

You need to do this because an Auto-Text cannot start with a space as spaces
are used by Word to delimit words on the page.
