Auto-corrected Arrows (-->) not working

M

Mike Robertson

It seems that the auto-corrected arrows in MS Word X service release 1
under 10.3.3 aren't working correctly, at least from this CD. After
re-installing the application as well as all fonts available in the
so-called "value pack," the problem persists. Rather than an arrow
replacement for, e.g. --> or <--, I end up with a diamond character
that, unfortunately, doesn't resemble an arrow closely enough for me to
be satisfied. Any ideas on how I can fix this problem? There seems to be
no existing documentation on this.

Thanks for any help,

Mike Robertson

It's possible that the font you are using doesn't have the arrow character,
and that something else gets substituted. Test it out in different fonts.

Otherwise, sounds like you aren't completely updated. The updaters need to
be run *after* installing anything from the value pack. And note that
reinstalling doesn't fix anything unless you run the Office Remover (in
value pack) first.

Standard Troubleshooting Procedures for Word X:

See here to make sure you are fully updated:
http://www.mcgimpsey.com/macoffice/office/vxversions.html

Then check for general troubleshooting tips:
http://www.mcgimpsey.com/macoffice/word/troubleshooting.html
In addition to the tips listed there, check your Word Startup Folder
(Applications: Microsoft Office X: Office: Startup) and see whether you have
any add-ins there that may be conflicting with Word (Endnote is a common
culprit).

Please post back and let the newsgroup know what worked, or if you are
posting back because nothing worked, be sure to explain what you already
tried.

This link has a bit more information if you get desperate, but is presented
in a less straightforward manner.

Hi Mike:

Let me guess... When you "re-installed" you didn't run the Office Remover
utility first?

So you kept your existing Normal Template. And that's where the problem is
likely to be.

Re-name the Normal template with Word quit. Word will create a new one when
it restarts, and it should all come right.

If you have been playing around with fonts, a re-boot may help. Restarting
a Unix system causes both the operating system and Word to rebuild their
font caches.

Hope this helps
