auto correcting

when i change a letter or a word in a sentence then when i start typing it
deletes every letter ahead of my curser.

I looked at the auto correct options but i don't know which one is doing this?

That's an excellent reply. And one that works.

However, is there a way to stop this from happening from the get-go? That
is, without having any other negative things happen?

It becomes very annoying to stop and correct a typo manually then to proceed
forward only to have any additional typing be "eaten," repeatedly. To have
a "correction" of same by hitting the "insert" key . . . over and over
again -- now, THAT's annoying. Thus, my request.

By default, Word starts in Insert mode. Pressing the Insert key on the
keyboard toggles between Insert and Overtype modes. But the Insert key
on the keyboard does not press itself. I'll leave it up to you to
figure out who is pressing your Insert key while you're not looking.

If you have a habit of unintentionally pressing the Insert key, you can
disable the Insert key from toggling between insert and overtype modes
in Word 2003 or earlier by clicking on Tools | Customize | Keyboard |
Categories: All Commands | Commands: Overtype | Current keys: Insert |
Remove. If you are prompted to save Normal.dot when you exit Word, say
yes. You can still turn on overtype mode in Word when needed by
double-clicking on the OVR indicator on the Status Bar at the bottom of
your Word window.

Ah-ha! Viola! After having Word (varies versions) over the years, I've yet
to get into the nitty-gritty, if you will, of this (Word 2003 v 11) word
processor. Some of what you say rings a bell such as Normal.dot prompts
(who knows what to do?) and how to keep OVR in over-write mode. As you can
see, I am befuddled by word processors. Uummm, that's meant half-heartedly
as a joke. And maybe the joke is on me. I'll try what you suggest. Thank
you.
