Auto fill ascending sequential numbers

I have an invoice template for my particular business, which is very specific
and detailed. My only problem is that I have to keep track and update the
invoice number every time that I complete the document. How can I make the
invoice number field auto fill with the next sequential number?

Which application is your invoice template in? I'm guessing it's either Word
or Excel?
