Auto numbering not working

Hi there, I'm trying to create/format a simple outlined Agenda for a meeting.
I've always been able to use multi-level list numbering and it will
automatically populate the numbers when I press enter to create a new
line...i.e., I start with I. type the text, press enter and I'll get a II.,
or if I press tab or Increase indent it will give me the next level a. or A.
ect... automatically.
This is not working in either Word 2003 or 2007 (I have both on my laptop).
I have to choose a style, or use the format painter.
I've gone to http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html
and followed those instructions but no luck. I don't want anything outside of
the options that come with Word... just a simple roman numeral, and then a
capital letter on level 2.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!!
Marty

If you're using Word's built-in heading styles for your outline, note that
the "Style for following paragraph" of the heading styles is Normal.

Yes, that is set to Normal.

I've noticed that the one that sits under "Current List" works properly.
It's the one that starts with the number 1. and the next level is a., and so
on... however the other ones do not... You have to format each line
individually.

Any other ideas?? This is driving me nuts! Should be so easy. Always worked
before. I've asked others in our school district if they have the same issue,
and they do. Could it have something to do with the new upgrade to our MS
Office to 2007? Is there a network setting that is not lining up properly?

Thanks!
Marty

I'm not sure what you're saying, but the result of the "Following style" is
that when you press Enter at the end of a (numbered) heading paragraph, you
get an (unnumbered) Normal paragraph.
