Auto numbering scheme?

Is there a way to set the auto numbering scheme? Perhaps a registry setting?
I couldn't find anything in the preferences...

Right now it does this:

1. Lksdlksjdf
a. Lkdslkjf
i. Lkdlksjdf
1) Lksjdlksjfd
a) Lkjsdlkjsdf
i) Lksjlkjsdf
One. Lksjdlkfj
First. lksjdlkfjs

I'd like it to do something different like:
I. dsdf
A. sdfsdf
1. sdfsdf
a. sasdf
1) sdfsdf
a) asdsdf

(don't pay attention to tabbing - that's just the message entry system.)

No Registry-settings for that.

Open the Task Pane, navigate to "Numbering" and select a pattern fitting
for your needs and/or customize the patterns.

It can be done. The easiest way is to type and override the automated
numbering as you are taking notes. Just type the letter or number and a
period or parenthesis and then Tab and the format will be retained in that
list. It's not able to be stored permanently, but it is easy to recreate
as you go.

Later, you can use the options in Format | Numbering or the Customize
Numbering Task Pane to apply individual numbering formats to all items at a
selected level.

The problem is that I'm looking to change the default. Every time I start a
note, I have to get the numbering correct for that note - which takes time
when I'm writing notes in class. It seems strange that the default ordering
is so weird, but more so that the selected order of the ranks can't be
changed across an entire notebook. I have a hard time accepting that it's
actually hardcoded somewhere...

I have run process monitor
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx against
OneNote and it does not appear that anything is written to the registry when
changing the numbering format.
That is not to say that the default numbering format is not read from a
registry key, but you would require documentation to make any headway.
It may be that the default is simply defined as the first listed numbering
format.
