Auto recovery of document changed all document formatting to defa

I typed a document in Word and when I saved it to My documents and also to a
floppy all of my formatting in the document was gone. At the end of the
saved document were 2 pages of gobbledegook - two of which were as follows:

" Valued Gateway ClienteC:\Documents and Settings\default\Application
Data\Microsoft\Word\AutoRecovery save of KIMBERLY K. as d"

Why did this happen and what can I do to make sure it doesn't happen again????
