Auto Recovery Of Files Question ? Help Please

Hello:

Running XP, and using Word 2002.

Still trying to find out why Word 2002 didn't save my sons document after
his PC crashed, even though the Auto-Recovery function was turned on with
the time set for every few minutes.
Can't help but have the feeling that it's there, somewhere, but that we are
looking in the wrong places for it.

a. I played around with my own PC a bit, and verified that we both had the
"don't show hidden files" box checked. But I could go all the way to:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Microsoft\Word,
while he had nothing after Username.

When he clicked on to show hidden files, he was able to get to the Word
Folder also.
Nothing in it for either of us except a folder called Stasrtup.

This seems funny, as we both had the don't show clicked initially, but I was
able to get to the Word folder, and he couldn't get past his User Name
folder until he showed hidden files.

Any ideas why the differences? Just trying to learn about this.

b. Is this Word Folder truly where the Auto Recovery files are supposed to
be ?

I thought that any recovered files are (also ?) supposed to be in a
"Task Pane," what I think is that right hand column that shows up on the
Word page, but there is nothing about Auto Recovered files there.

Any other ideas where the document might be "hiding" ?

Much thanks,
Bob
