Auto recovery

What's happening is that a class will come in and use MS Word ona lab
of Mac Mini's OS X 10.4.7 and all goes well. When they close, they
tell the program that they do not want to save the document and then
close out. When they log in and run Word the next time though, it asks
if they'd like to auto-recover the document. We would like MS Word to
NOT try auto recovering documents we don't want to keep. Any help
would be great. Thanks.

AutoRecover is a feature that is either On or Off - it doesn't have any
provision for selectively choosing which docs are *important* & which
aren't. However, it is only supposed to operate if the file/application
quits unexpectedly. If the file is closed properly the AutoRecover data is
deleted regardless of whether the user chooses to save or not.

Are you certain that the users aren't simply *telling* you they are quitting
properly? Can you replicate this yourself?

It's conceivable that the AutoRecover data deletion (or Finder) is not
updating as fast as the users are logging out, but that isn't likely. Other
than that there should be no AutoRecover data when they log back in.

Any other unusual behavior or details about the situation?

Bob's right. That's either a bad shut-down or it's bad folder permissions.
Even if they are NOT going to save the document, the user needs the ability
to save to and delete from the folder the document is about to be saved
into, and into the system Temp folder.

If Word can't write to both places under the logged-in user ID, it will
create an Auto-Recovery file in the Temp folder which will confuse it into
thinking there is a document to be recovered when the next user logs in.

Get your Administrator to check the folder permissions involved.

Hope this helps
