auto something or other

I have a file and every time I add a level 1 heading, the program adds a
roman numeral. I delete and save but I come back and open the document, I
get the same darn thing. I unchecked every option in the auto correct pages.
I also went to format and went to bolts and numbering and pressed the "none"
button. I am a blind computer user Will I need sighted help or is this
something I can fix myself. Thanks in advance to all who will help.

Sa,

The problem is that the document's Heading 1 style is defined with
numbering, and altering an existing heading doesn't change that.
To fix: Click Format-> Style, then single-click Heading 1 in the
list, click Modify, Format, Numbering, THEN click the 'None' box.

Thanks. I think it worked.
