auto text in forms

I am trying to put auto text into a text field in a
protected form, however, I cannot access the auto text
dialog box because it is grayed out as though it is not
available. If I unprotect the form, I can access auto
text. Surely this can't be right. So HOW do I access auto
text when a form is protected?
