Auto Text Not Working

M

Michelle

My auto text is only filling in if it is the first thing I type on a line. If
I try to have auto text fill in information after the first word, it does not
work. This was working and I stepped away, Norton ran a virus scan, and now
it does not work properly.

I don't know that it is related to your problem, but...
In Norton, turn off the Office Plug-In. The problems this causes in Word are
numerous and perplexing. So far as anyone knows, it serves no useful
purpose. If turning this off helps with the AutoText, please write back.

If it doesn't (or is already turned off) also write back and someone else
may have a better suggestion.

Are we talking about AutoText or AutoCorrect? For AutoText you have to
confirm an entry in some way, with AutoCorrect, it will insert when you
press the space bar.

I did turn off the Office Plug-In, then rebooted my computer. That did not
work. Then I unloaded Office 2000 and reloaded Office 2000 and that did not
work. I do want to remind you that the Auto Text IS working if it is the
first thing put in a line, but it does not work after that. If there is a
space at the beginning of the line, Auto Text will not work either.

How are you entering the AutoText? By typing the entry name and pressing F3?
By typing the first four letters and accepting the AutoComplete tip? If the
latter, are the letters separated from preceding text by a space?

M

Michelle

I enter the first letters and accept the AutoComplete tip. Yes, the letters
are separated from the preceding text by a space.

Suzanne S. Barnhill

So are you not getting the AutoComplete tip when you type the letters in the
middle of a line?

M

Michelle

Exactly! I really don't understand why! I do want to thank you for the F3 tip
though, because that works, but it is still an "extra step" for me...

S

Suzanne S. Barnhill

That's definitely bizarre. I found that I didn't get the tip if I typed the
AutoText entry name immediately after punctuation, but there is no other
situation I've tried that prevents it from appearing.

Does this continue to occur if you start Word using the /a switch? Go
to Start/Run and run:

winword /a

Note the space before the forward slash.

Umm, this would have to be tested using built-in AutoText entries, since
user-created entries would not be available when starting Word with the /a
switch.

M

Michelle

Yes, this continues to occur if I open with the /a switch. It is happening on
my husband's computer also. Is there any possiblity that it could be
something with my wireless home network, or is that farfetched?

I'm having the exact same problem, but never figured out that it was only
working on the first word in a line. The rest of it will not work - I am
doing medical transcription using a large set of auto texts, and it's not
working. Frustrating.
