Auto Texts

Hi guys,

One of my clients has 'lost' his auto text entries. They seem to have just
'disappeared'. Does anyone know a way of getting these back and more
importantly, how do I back 'em up so this doesn't happen again ? TIA.

Regards Colin.

The usual reason for all AutoText disappearing is that the Normal.dot
template has been replaced by saving a document or another template to that
name. The fix for that is to let Word recreate the original Normal.dot. See
the section "Creating a new Normal.dot from scratch" in
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm for
instructions.

As for what to back up, AutoText is in Normal.dot by default, although you
can specify that individual entries should be saved in other templates. To
back up AutoText, you back up these template files. See
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/FilesToBackup.htm for a list of these
and other files that should be backed up regularly.

Jay has already explained how this likely happened. Building a new
normal.dot will at least restore the built-in AutoText. See
http://addbalance.com/word/movetotemplate.htm for step-by-step instructions
on moving / sharing / copying / backing-up customizations including
AutoText, AutoCorrect, keyboard assignments, toolbars, macros, etc.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies. I'll send this info to my client and hope he can
retrieve his texts! Many thanks.
