Auto Update?

K

Kerry D.

Hi,

When I started up my mac this morning, I received a
messaage that an Office update was available (1.1 If I
remember correctly.. it was early). This is the first
time since my original install that I received an update
like this. Anyway, I installed the update, but am now
trying to find information on the update itself. I can't
seem to find anyting about it on MacTopia.
I'm a little nervous. Can a virus be passed on to my mac
through a "legitimate" looking update?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Hi

I received the same update after I reinstalled OS X. I don't think it's a
virus.

Hi Kerry,

There's no need to worry about viruses if you use the AutoUpdate feature.

Concerning updates, Microsoft never sends email annoucements with
attachments. These are *always* viruses. Don't pay any attention to them.

There's a "More Information" button in the auto-update dialog box. If
you had clicked it you would have been taken to this web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/autoupdate/description/0409MSau010001.htm

This first update is more like a test. It simply updates the updater.
More substantial updates will eventually follow.

Hi Jim,

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond to my
inquiry. I looked again last night to see if I could
find any information on the update. No luck.
Anyway, I feel much better about the update after reading
your post.

Thanks again,
Kerry

The auto-update was for Microsoft AutoUpdate, from 1.1 to 1.1.1. In other
words, AutoUpdate updated itself. That's why you found no info about an
Office Mac update at Mactopia.

Actually, an update had already been distributed via AutoUpdate. The first
update distributed was MSN Explorer 2.0.1 for Macintosh.

The first true test will come when an update for Office 2004 is released.
It's possible that the proofing tool updates at Mactopia have been released
via AutoUpdate to users with those installed, so the test might have already
taken place.

I have proofing tools installed with Office 2004 and haven't found any auto
updates.
