AutoArchive Ambiguity

I'm running OL2K3 on my local computer.
My PST file is slowly approaching 1GB and I figured it's time to start
archiving.
I paid a visit to Tools > Options > Other > AutoArchive with the
intention of setting up a schedule but was quickly daunted by the
apparant redundancy of options.

In particular, I'm baffled by the option:
"[]Delete Expired Items (email folders only)"

Why give us the option do delete items here if the same option appears
below (assuming the option "[]Archive or delete old items" is checked)?

If I select "[]Delete Expired Items (email folders only)" will those
items still be archived?

See? It confusing.

Incidentally, are PSTs in OL2K3 as flaky as they were in older versions
of Outlook? I recall reading on this NG that PSTs now support file
sizes in the terabytes. Are they more robust as well?

Yes, they're a bit more robust now.

Expired items are items where the sender set an expiration date and that
date has passed. It's not used very often normally. If that option is
checked, the expired items won't be archived but deleted

Thanks, Vince, it makes more sense now.

On a side note, I just finished a round of AutoArchive/Compact, hoping
for faster load times or better performance but I don't really see a
difference.

If PST files are more robust now (which they seem to be), and smaller
PST files don't give faster performance what's the point of archiving
messages, assuming drive space is not an issue?

Exceedingly large folders are definitely slow even with the newer PSTs. So,
it's always better to keep your main PST lean.
