Autocalculate not functioning

I am using Word 2003 for PC. I add 2 text (form) fields in the document and
then insert the calculation using ctrl+F9.
When I protect the document it does not work. Now here is the interesting
part if I remove the TOC and then protect the document it works.
Anybody have any reasons as to why this is happening?

I believe you need a macro to take care of the updating. Ask in a
programming newsgroup such as microsoft.public.word.vba.general.
