AutoComplete has stopped working in Outlook 2000

Yesterday morning, I had a computer with Outlook 2000, where AutoComplete
WOULD work in the To: line of an email. You'd start typing the address, and
a bunch of suggestions (or just one if there was only one) would appear.

Well, for some strange and magical reason, it just up and stopped doing that
yesterday *afternoon*. I did nothing but delete 1 of the suggestions (by
using the arrow key and hitting DELETE) it gave me. Now it refuses to
suggest anything anymore.

How do I fix that?

Autocompletion is a very fragile feature at best. The number of reasons we
have found that cause it to stop working has become nearly countless, and
Microsoft has done nothing to admit or address any of them. The majority of
these discoveries have been made by the developers at Ingressor, whose
website Oliver already posted. Sadly, the only method we have found to get
autocompletion to start working again is to create a new Outlook profile
from scratch, which of course forces you to start over with a new (empty)
autocompletion cache. Hopefully, you can use the methods posted on the
Ingressor site to migrate your old cache to your new profile.
Microsoft should be embarrassed for not having addressed these problems. I
am embarrassed for them.

Resetting the NK2 file did the trick. But now the user has to enter all that
stuff all over again, which I was trying to avoid.

Here's what happened before all this went nuts:

There was an incorrect entry in the autocomplete file. The user wanted (for
an example) "(e-mail address removed)" to come up when she started typing in the
name, but an incorrect entry came up ("(e-mail address removed)").

I looked inside the NK2 file, and found the incorrect entry. It was shown
as "s o m e b o d y 2 @ e m a i l . c o m". I just removed a "2 " so that it
would come out right.

And it worked! "(e-mail address removed)" would autocomplete as expected.

But that lasted for only a few hours, then it stopped working altogether.
Some addresses WOULD work, others wouldn't. Then, finally, all of them
stopped. Even tabbing fields wouldn't complete the address.

Well, I guess I'll never manually edit the NK2 file again. Would be NICE if
there were some way to *edit* that safely...
