Autocorrect does not retain entries

I use Autocorrect to insert field equations to generate frequently used
scientific notations that include subscript numerals and dots postioned over
letters. When I set up the autocorrect feature on a new computer (Windows
XP; Word 2003) I find that the autocorrect entries disappear when I close the
program so I have to set them up all over again the next time I open Word.
How do I get it to truely "Save" the entries?

Have you tried the Save All function after doing a customisation of
Autotext/Autocorrect/toolbar/menu entry?
After whatever change, press Shft+File, Save All, close Word, and reopen to
see if the change has been retained.
If this works, a question for you, do you have Acrobat installed?
The Acrobat addin can cause some changes not to be saved to the Normal.dot,
such as new Autotext/Autocorrect/toolbar/menu entries, etc.
If you do have Acrobat then have a look at this webpage below, especially
the section on Add/Remove Program, Modify.
I had similar problems with Customise and Autotext/Autocorrect/toolbar/menu,
and doing the following solved the problem BUT I also found that if you do
the instructions and then reboot, Open and close word, then reverse the
Modify instructions, the Acrobat functions return without the clashes with
saving Customise and Autotext/Autocorrect/toolbar/menu.

Hope this helps

Thanks, the 'save all' actions seems to have worked. I haven't explored the
Acrobat issue yet but will do so next. Many thanks

Glad this works for you.
The Add-in correction reads harder than it actually is.
If this does solve your problem, then at least you don't need to do the
Shift-File all the time ;-)
All the best
