AutoCorrect entries getting corrupted with junk text

Can AutoCorrect entries spontaneously change themselves? In my Word 97,
several times lately long-existing AutoCorrect entries got junk text
added to them, which I'm sure I never did. What could explain this?

Here's an example of what I mean. A long existing AutoText entry has
turned into this:

stead.] , such as t

Again, possibly a corrupt template. AutoText is stored in templates,
normal.dot by default.

I keep no AutoText in normal.dot, by preference. All of my AutoText is in
one or more custom global templates. See
http://addbalance.com/word/movetotemplate.htm for step-by-step instructions
on moving / sharing / copying / backing-up customizations including
AutoText, AutoCorrect, keyboard assignments, toolbars, macros, etc.

Well, routinely putting all my AutoText entries in a global template
would be a big change. If it is a corrupt Normal.dot that caused this,
it's the first time it's happened in the six plus years I've had Word
97. So if it happens again, I'll consider what you said.

I misspoke. It is AutoText entries that got corrupted with junk
text.
