Hi

I'm typing a paper in Word and all of a sudden everything is getting underlined in red as if it's spelled wrong, and autocorrect is doing some strange things. I typed in "number" and it changed it to "Lumber" and "For example" became "Fo rexample."

I am using the US keyboard, but I did switch to the Spanish keyboard momentarily before this started happening to add an i with an accent above it. This has only started happening this week and I haven't downloaded any updates or anything.

It's really hard to type with this going on! I turned off autocorrect but everything is still red. Any advice?

When you switched to Spanish, Word changed the language marked in the text
to Spanish.

When you switched back again, due to a bug Word did not switch the text
language back. You need to correct it manually.

See the Help topic " Change the language of the spelling dictionary" for
more.

Cheers

Thanks John!

I ended up shutting down and the next day Word was back to normal. But I'm sure it's going to happen again, so I will try out your suggestion.

When Word starts from cold, it "collects" the current language from the
system, and will use that until you switch keyboards. That will set things
back to normal for "new" text, but leave text typed before the re-start
marked in Spanish.

Try turning off "Match font with keyboard" in the Word>Edit preferences.
That will slow it down a bit.

I've found that the kybd switch business is more trouble than it's worth
unless you have to type large amounts in a particular language that requires
unusual characters. Instead - especially for "common" languages such as
Spanish, German & French - typing the appropriate characters without
changing the kybd is relatively simple... As long as you know what strokes
to use :) For example, é, ñ, í, here required no change of kybd.

Unfortunately this doesn't produce very well in a news message but hopefully
you can decipher it. For some reason it was omitted from the Help in Word
2008 but the strokes still work as they should.

To produce Press

à, è, ì, ò, ù À, È, Ì, Ò, Ù OPTION+` (ACCENT GRAVE), the Letter
á, é, í, ó Ã, É, Ã, Ó, Ú OPTION+e, the letter
â, ê, î, ô, û Â, Ê, Î, Ô, Û OPTION+i, the letter
ã, ñ, õ Ã, Ñ, Õ OPTION+n, the letter
ä, ë, ï, ö, ü, ÿ Ä, Ë, Ã, Ö, Ãœ, Ÿ OPTION+u, the letter
Ã¥, Ã… OPTION+a or OPTION+SHIFT+a
æ, Æ OPTION+' (single quotation mark) or OPTION+SHIFT+' (single quotation
mark)
Å“, Å’ OPTION+q or OPTION+SHIFT+q
ç, Ç OPTION+c or OPTION+SHIFT+c
ø, Ø OPTION+o or OPTION+SHIFT+o
¿ OPTION+SHIFT+?
¡ OPTION+1 ß OPTION+s

You can also use the Insert> Symbol dialog, the Symbols group of the Object
Palette in the Toolbox as well as the OS X Character Palette to insert
literally any characters you need.
