AutoCorrect in Word 2007

Please can someone tell me why the AutoCorrect list is not available
in Word 2007? When you go to Word options, Proofing, AutoCorrect
Options, Autocorrect tab - there is only a list of symbols. However,
intriguingly, when the language is changed from English UK to English
US, the list populates. There must be a setting somewhere which
enables the list to be shown when working with English UK?

The handful of symbols you see are built into Word and are
language-independent. The rest of the (plain text) AutoCorrects are held in
..acl files - one per language. If an .acl file does not exist when needed,
Word will create a new one.

When it creates a .acl file, Word will populate it, if it can, from a base
file for the language. If you have an English version of Word you will, by
default, get an English US file and, if you then use another variant of
English, such as English UK, the English US file will be used to create the
file if it doesn't exist. Thereafter you will have an English UK file and
anything you add to it, or remove from it, will be English UK only - Word
never recreates it.

It sounds as if you have an an English version of Word and, for whatever
reason, an empty English UK .acl file. If you delete it (or rename it), next
time you try to use it, a new one should be created from the base English US
one. The file, called MSO2057.ACL should be in
C:\Users\(userid)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Office (on Vista) or
C:\Documents and Settings\(userid)\Application Data\Microsoft\Office (on
XP).

Thanks Tony for this - it worked a treat!
