AutoCorrect options won't stay turned off

I am using Word from Microsoft Office XP.

I turn off most AutoCorrect and AutoFormat options from the Tools
menu, but they keep coming back as selected when next time I run Word.
I did not have this happen with earlier versions of Word.

How do I ensure that deselected options are retained as deselected?

According to

settings are part of what's stored in Word's Data key in the registry.
That key sometimes gets corrupted. There are instructions for
rebuilding it at
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/MissngMenusEtc.htm.
