AutoCorrect question

Using Word 2003.
Want to set up an entry in AutoCorrect which will automatically change a
period followed by two spaces to a period followed by only 1 space (as in
the end of a sentence). The AutoCorrect dialog won't accept non
alpha-numeric character entries as valid choices. Is there any way to
implement this automatic function in Word? Thanks.

Sorry, no. AutoCorrect is a complete nonstarter for this.

You can get the grammar checker to flag occurrences (in Tools >
Options > Spelling & Grammar, click the Settings button and set the
"Spaces required between sentences" dropdown to 1), but it won't do
automatic correction.

You can use the Replace function to find ".<space><space>" and replace
with ".<space>". This can be automated by making macros to intercept
the Save and Print functions
(http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/MacrosVBA/InterceptSavePrint.htm) and
having them do the replacement before carrying out their actions.

are you using some special application...because two spaces after a period
is the correct usage...
also after a colon, question mark, exclamation point...

What I did was similar to your 2nd suggestion: create a macro to search
and replace all double spaces with single spaces and then added a link to
the macro on the toolbar. Thanks.

I like single spaces in documents using proportional fonts. I think it looks
neater and I've read guides which also suggest the same for submitting
manuscripts. The problem is I can't break the habit after so many years of
typing double spaces after each sentence. It's automatic for me. So I need a
cleanup routine. I mentioned in the previous post that I finally arrived at
the solution of creating a macro to replace double spaces with single spaces
and then put a link to same on the toolbar. Thanks.

Most places today seem to have switched to just one space after a period.
Two spaces seems to be the exception now.
