AutoCorrect will not correct can;t to can't but it is in my list?

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Power PC Email Client: pop I routinely misspell can't as can;t so I put it into my AutoCorrect list to correct. BUT, though it is right there in the list, it never ever makes the correction.

Why?

My AutoCorrect works awesome and this is the 1 word not correcting.

Any thoughts?

I routinely misspell can't as can;t so I put it into my AutoCorrect
list to correct. BUT, though it is right there in the list, it never
ever makes the correction.

I suspect it has something to do with the fact that the typo is induced
by a punctuation (a semi-colon).
Do you have the same problem with won;t?

I use SpellCatcher in most applications and it's pretty good for this
kind of things, but I removed the same typo from my auto-correct list
because I want to eventually force myself not to make the typo anymore

Good call, I think your right.

It is not a spelling issue as much as it is a speed issue. It is not that I can't spell the word, it is that I get hasty.

But, I did try won;t and it will also not correct. interesting.

Well it's the same thing for me, but I want to "force" my fingers to
end up on the proper key and stop missing by one key almost
systematically :->

I suspect that the mechanism stops monitoring a word after it hits a
space, a coma, period, ellipsis or... a semi-colon - unfortunately in
this case.

Try some of the third party applications that do auto correct. Typinator,
TypeIt4Me, SpellCatcherX for example. They include lists to autocorrect.

I even tried to setup something as simple as

;t to 't

and it did not work

It won't.

The spell correction only works on complete words, and a word is
defined as a series of characters between two 'word boundary'
characters. There are lots f word boundary caracters, but they do
include space, comma, semi-colon etc. Therefore, no 'word' containing
one of these characters can ever be replaced using auto-correct.

Sorry I'm late to the party, but...

....FWIW:

The entries *are* in Entourage's AutoCorrect List but they Just Don't
Work... They behave properly in Word. I.E.;

can;t = can't
won;t = won't
aren;t = aren't

As well as a number of possessives, such as company;s = company's.
