Word 2002

1. In AutoCorrect/AutoFormat as you type. I have "Hyphens with a dash"
clicked, but it doesn't work. I've gotten around this by adding it manually
into AutoCorrect/AutoCorrect, but is this normal behaviour for Word or an
anomoly in mine?

Also is there a shortcut key for a dash. In one or more earlier versions it
used to be Ctrl + Shift + - (hyphen). At least I think it was. The other
possibility is that I created the shortcut and have forgotten that I did.

2. I write in two languages. Is it possible to use the same autocorrect
file with both? I've imported my old file from Word 2000 into 2002 and it
works fine with my default language, but I get the one that comes with Word
2002 when I change languages.

As I recall, the hyphens-to-dash AutoCorrect works only when you
terminate the hyphens with a space or other word-ender.

The built-in shortcut for a dash is Ctrl+Shift+KEYPAD MINUS,
so you were close.

Can't help you with #2.

Word will convert two hyphens to a long (em) dash under these conditions:

1. There are no spaces on either side of the hyphens.

2. You have completed the word following the hyphens.

IOW, if you type "text--text," the correction will not fire until you have
typed the second "text" and inserted a space or a punctuation mark.
Conversion of double hyphens under other conditions (spaces around them,
etc.) is spotty.

Word will convert a single hyphen to an en dash under these conditions:

1. There is a space on either side of the hyphens ("text - text").

2. You have completed the word following the hyphen and typed a space or
punctuation mark.

Note that the en dash conversion is quite useless to U.S. users who use en
dashes in continuous numbers and the like; its purpose is to serve U.K.
users who use a spaced en dash where we use an em dash.
