Autocorrect doesn't run when you do the spell check. It runs as you type
the text. Start typing a sentence with a lower case letter and see if it
switches it to upper case. Most of the time I never notice when
autocorrect does it's work. My brain just thinks I spelled it correctly
even though my fingers really screwed it up.
