AutoCorrectFile???

Have been unable to use my MS Office applications for the past three months
because the dialog box captured and uploaded in the link below keeps popping
up. My checks in the various fora suggests that I may have mistakenly tweaked
something but in Windows rather than Office. How do I reverse whatever I may
have done in error. The deatails of the problem are captured in the link
below;

No, all the details are not in the link.

What operating system?
What version of Office?

In File-Properties:
Have you checked to see if the file is read-only?
Have you checked to see if you have permission to modify the file?

What "tweaks" did you do three months ago?

Hurray! Got a response! Thanks Alan. Here are answers to your questions;
Operating System - Vista Home Premium
Office Version - MS Office 2007 plus

The files in question (all of them) are mine so issue of permissions dont
arise. However, I have gone to the lenghts of checking file permissions and
even granting permission to 'Everybody' on the laptop since I am the only
user! I have also had to repair and even re-install Office, yet no dice.
Which is why I suspect it has to do with Windows OS rather than the Office.

Besides, its not that I can't open the files, its just that I can't make
additions to or even creat new files (all applications) without the said
dialog box popping up and preventing any inputs.

Dont remember if I actually tweaked anything.

Hope there is a solution to this. Thanks

You didn't answer about the read-only properties of that file.
I don't follow why you are talking about "files" when your link shows
one AutoCorrect file. Did you check that one?
BTW, I have Vista and Office 2007 and I don't have that particular
..acl file (though I don't use Office much)

When you say "can't make additions to or even creat new files (all
applications) without the said dialog box popping up and preventing
any inputs.", do you mean that literally?
i.e. do you mean non-Office apps or all Office apps?

Hi Alan
I didnt chk the attributes of the file identified in the dialog box.

I talked about 'files' because I get the dialog box when I open existing MS
Office files or try to create new ones.

Yes Alan, literally on all Office Apps!

But the good news for the benefit of others that might run into the same
problem is that I got a heads up from the Window Vista forum which has helped
clear up the problem. The solution is to get the patch from the links listed
below and to apply the 'TakeOwnership' directly on the file identified in the
dialog box.

Here are the links:

How to Change Folder Permissions

===================================================

From a message by Rehman F.
Here are the steps to modify ownership and permissions of folders and files:

1. Right-click the file or folder, click Properties, and then click the
Security tab.

2. Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.

3. Click Edit, and then do one of the following:

· To change the owner to a user or group that is not listed, click
Other users and groups and, in Enter the
object name to select (examples), type the name of the user or group,
and then click OK.

· To change the owner to a user or group that is listed, in the Change
owner to box, click the new owner.

4. If you want to take ownership of the contents of the folder, select the
Replace owner on sub containers and objects check box.

5. Click OK, and then click Yes when you receive the following message:

You do not have permission to read the contents of directory folder name.
Do you want to replace the directory
permissions with permissions granting you Full Control?

All permissions will be replaced if you click Yes.

Note folder name is the name of the folder that you want to take ownership of.

6. Click OK, and then reapply the permissions and security settings that
you want for the folder and its contents.

Additional considerations

7· An administrator can take ownership of any file on the computer.

8· Assigning ownership of a file or a folder might require you to elevate
your permissions using User Access Control

And in case we have lost track of what started all these, here is the link
to the dialog box again showing the troublesome file:
