Autofill a protected footer in a template

I

I hate word

Does anybody know how to do this? ...

i have a company template document and wish to enable users to enter
different information into the footer of each new document without them
being able to tamper with the design/layout (therefore while it's
protected).

Think it requires scripting of some sort, if so this is beyond my
technical MS Word knowledge - help somebody!!

No scripting needed.
Check out Word's help for "field codes: styleref field". I use that
technique for running heads. You may want to experiment with show/hide
hidden text as well, so your users do not have to show where they
entered the information for the footer.
