autofilter count

While in autofilter mode (Data > filter > autofilter) and after I
select my required criteria to filter on, Excel *sometimes* shows in
the bottom left status bar how many records of total records are
found.

However, sometimes this doesn't happen. How can I set the option/
settings so that it returns a count ?
