Autofilter problem

Hello,
I use the autofilter extensively in my Excel spreadsheets. Never had a problem before. Now I do.
For a large spreadsheet, the autofilter has stopped working appropriately. When I click on the dropdown arrows at the top of the column, it gives me the typical options (Sort descending, ascending, etc.) but then only offers me one option of exact data. Rather than giving me a list with the different data options to filter, it only offers me the data from the top row. So there is no way for me to use autofilter to only show me the rows that pertain to my query. Again, this only happens in one file, and it happens to be a large one.
I have copied the data into a new file and nothing changes.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance,
Rodrigo

What type of data?

What happens if you copy a smaller segment of the data - say, less than
1000 lines?

Does your dropdown go to the bottom of the screen?

Did the data originate from a web page - in which case you might be
seeing non-breaking space characters?

Thank you for helping out.
The data was all entered by hand. The autofilter doesn't work for either numbers or text. I have previously been able to filter by year, school, teacher, etc. Now I cannot filter by anything.
I copied the data to a new spreadsheet and then deleted all but 10 rows and 10 columns. Still nothing.
Thoughts?

I can't think of anything other than corruption of the workbook. But if
you're copying to a fresh workbook and it's still happening, that sounds
unlikely too.

Would you send me a screen shot of a sample of the data and the autofilter
context menu?
