autoformating problem

HELP!!!

when I mark a word and hit the "bold" button, the entire
document goes bold. If I mark a word and hit
the "underline" button the entire document is underlined.

In either case, if I subsequently hit the "undo" button,
the document returns to the way it weas originally, and
my selection is in the new format.

This is driving me crazy. Any ideas?
