autoformatted (page-wide) lines -- how to remove?

A long term issue: if I (intentionally or otherwise) use
Autoformat As You Type and generate a line across my page
I cannot remove that line -- not with backspace, not with
cut (doesn't come up on the right-click menu), not with
delete... I can move the line up and down in the text
short distances, but that is all. Any thoughts/advice?
