Automated updates and disabled Outlook 2002

I received some automated updates from Microsoft overnight. Often when this
happens, I need to reconfigure my Outlook 2002 by using "detect and repair".
This time however, it keeps prompting me for my original CDs. I have them,
but I am on an extended business trip so they are not available to me right
now. This has never happened before and quite frankly I'm a little ticked.
Am I supposed to travel with them??? I have received countless updates and
used "detect and repair" many times to reconfigure Outlook. Do I have any
options to fix this before returning home? I keep getting "operation failed"
and "not implemented" when I try to send/receive or create a new message.

It depends on the corruption that you have in your installation. You should
have realized that needing to run Detect and Repair after every update isn't
normal behavior and was an indication of something being wrong with your
computer already before you went away.

At this point you could try starting Outlook in Safe Mode and see if it
works then;
Start-> Run; outlook.exe /safe

To find out if it is an installation issue or a configuration issue you can
create a new (test) user on the computer, logon with that user and see if it
works then.

If it still doesn't work you could try a System Restore.

Another option would be if somebody could sent you a copy of your CD either
via snail mail or digitally.

Whyever would you allow automatic updates if you're not in a position to
handle any outcome?
Use the system restore point that Update should have created to revert your
system back to before the update. Then modify Microsoft Update (in the
Security Center in Control Panel) to ask your permission before installing
anything.
