Automatic Backup

is there a means by which to open a backup file created by the Save
As>Tools>General Options>Always Create Backup other than with the original
file.

I have backup copies created I need to open, but believe the original
workbook has been deleted.

What you want to do involves VBA programming. I'll try to help you with
that. If you wish, send me your file or a made-up file that shows your
actual layout and a few examples of what you want to happen, showing some

The file name does not have an extension, so I am prompted in a dialog box
for the application to use. When I select Excel, I receive a message that
the file "cannot be accessed. The file may be read-only, or you may be
trying to access a read only location. Or the server the document is stored
on may not be responding".

I copied the file to a local hard drive, and attempted to open the copied
file, with the same result. I renamed the copied file to .xls and to .xlb
with the same results.

In Excel 2007 the backup file is .xlk, and Excel 2007 will open it after
a warning dialog. You didn't mention your version, but earlier ones may
work differently. Perhaps you can share that info and someone with the
version you are using can assist.

The version of Excel I have loaded is Excel 2002 (10.6854.6845) SP3.
