Automatic Calculation of Formulas

Please advise.

Excel 2000
Latest Service Pack

We have a workbook that sporadically does not recalculate formulas. We have
ensured that Automatic Calculation is set appropriately. To further confuse
the issue, we have had this difficulty on the same workbook from different
machines. However, if you open the formulas and navigate from the cell, the
formulas will update.

Note: The Excel workbook does contain a large number of worksheets and
graphs.

Please advise if this is a known bug or possibly a memory issue. We have
checked the file for corruption.

This sometimes happens with large files if you try to enter data or edit
a cell Excel will stop calculation leaving the 'Calc' Prompt.

The purpose of this is to speed data entry, otherwise the wait from
entering one piece of data to the next would be quite long and thus
slow.

Hope this helps.

If this is the case, when does the autocalc continue. With large workbooks,
you can't stop and visit every cell so the formulas will update.

We have attempted pressing F9 and saving the document, even though we
shouldn't need to with auto calc selected, and formulas still will not
update until you visit the individual cells containing the formulas.

Thanks,

The Autocalc is turned off for data entry, by pressing F9 the sheet
should then manually re-calculate. When the calc has finished if you
continue to enter data the sheet will autocalc on entry as long as you
do not interupt the process again with data entry as this will turn it
off again.

It sounds as though the workbook is very large. One problem I had once
was that all the formulae had been copied down to the bottom row on
every sheet by the author of the file, this meant that the amount of
calculation was vast. The actual file size was in excess of 14Meg, once
all the sheets were trimmed to the correct size the file size dropped
to 1.2Meg, and the autocalc began working as expected.

I am not sure if you have the same problem but one way to check is to
produce a cut down version of the work book to check any problems.

Hope this is of some help.
