Automatic column width increase unwanted

Is it possible to avoid (turn off) the automatic increase of column width
that occurs to make room for certain numbers, e.g. when the number of
decimal places is increased beyond what can be displayed with the original
width?

Did you try adjusting the width manually? As soon as I did that, excel wouldn't
resize the column on its own. (same response as before)

That's right - if the column width has been given a specific value, Excel
will not change it when the user enters a number that does not fit. But what
I ask is: Can the automatic resizing be *turned off*, without specifying a
width for the column (before or after)???
