Automatic compression, via StuffIt deLuxe in Entourage

Hello, Group Members:

This is rather a complex message, so please bear with me. Probably
someone has had this problem and has been able to solve it.

I use a Microsoft application ‹ Entourage ‹ in M.Office for Mac 2004.
There is a problem I find when adding an attachment to a message. The
buttons for opting whether or not to allow Entourage to automatically
compress an attachment file (in my case it would be compression via StuffIt
‹ I use StuffIt deLuxe), in the window called: Attachments, are dimmed out
and the done-over-my-head setting is the button that says, COMPRESSION:
NONE. Of
course, I ought to be able to click on the other button but to countermand
this but, as stated, both are dimmed out and, without any consultation with
me, it is set to None.

Before I installed an upgraded version of StuffIt deLuxe (after moving
to Tiger ‹ the older version would not work with Tiger), it was possible to
choose whether or not to allow Entourage to compress any particular
attachment. If this option was chosen it would simply be compressed without
my having to do anything. All I had to do was to click: ADD, and the
compression would automatically take effect on the selected item. Then came
the upgrade and with it, this failure of Entourage to respect my preference
(entered in the Entourage Preferences panel, of course) to have the
compression facility use StuffIt deLuxe.

I looked at documents that were installed with StuffIt deLuxe, and found
that Allume Systems know all about this problem. On their website they offer
a sop, which is to download an ³Entourage Fix². I did so, and it installed
an earlier StuffIt Engine (which, they say, will not conflict with the
already-installed, up-to-date StuffIt Engine.

This has not resolved the problem, and Allume Systems (or it may be
Smith Micro) say they can do no more. They say that the curing of this
problem is the responsibility of Microsoft.

It is possible, of course, for me to pre-compress files with StuffIt
deLuxe, and then simply attach them in the ordinary way, but it is not as
convenient as the lost facility I enjoyed at first. Besides, I like things
to work as they ought to do.

There is a bit of a twist to this story: I had this problem before, when
I first bought this version of StuffIt deLuxe (the current version is 12.0.2
but I think my first Tiger-compatible version was v 12.0). At the time, I
resigned myself to losing the facility referred to and then, one day after a
few months of it not working as required, it suddenly started to work as it
should have done from the beginning (I shall never know why it started
without me having done anything to bring this about).

It was only the other day that, for a good enough reason, I needed to
re-install StuffIt deLuxe version 12.0.2. After doing this, the automatic
compression facility has once more been lost. The buttons are greyed-out,
and NONE is the button that is chosen.

Can anyone tell me how to restore it? I have tried every orthodox way to
do this and clicked on all the relevant settings in both StuffIt deLuxe and
also Entourage. Also, I have re-started several times afterwards, with no
success.

With thanks in advance to any/all who may reply,
