automatic copy on update

I have a contracts form which has the current post ID and
location displayed on it. This information is changed if
the person transfers to another post or is allocated a
leavers position.
However, I would like to keep a record of the original
post held with the original contract record (in a field
called contract post ID). I have an 'old contract' check
box which is checked if the contract becomes obsolete. It
is at this stage I would like the post ID from the current
post to be automatically copied into the contract.post ID
field to be stored for future reference.

Is this possible or am I barking up the wrong tree? Should
I be doing something different?
