Automatic deletion of Junk Mail - doesn't work

E

emailus

Using Entourage 11.1.0 on Tiger.

Despite me having set Entourage to 'Delete messages from the Junk
E-Mail folder older than 1 days', junk email remains in the folder
until I manually clear it. This has always been the case, under Panther

as well, and continues post Entourage database rebuild.

Anyone know why this is?

Cheers...Steven

I don't see any option anywhere to 'Delete messages from the Junk
E-Mail folder older than 1 days', not in Account settings, at any rate.

Do you mean you've created a schedule to do this? Have you enabled the
schedule (checked it to run automatically)?

And how frequently have you set it to run? If it's still set to "Manually"
(the default) it won't run by itself - you have to run the schedule from
Tools/Run Schedule.

If you want it to run automatically, you have to change the "When" to
"Repeating Schedule", "Timed Schedule", "Recurring" or "On Quit"/

Note that this will just move the messages to the Deleted Items Folder. You
can also set that Empty Deleted Items Folder schedule to run On Quit or some
other schedule. (Note that if they both run On Quit, the messages may not
get emptied until the next time.)

The option exists under Tools>Junk E-Mail Protection..

I've ticked the relevant box, and nominated 1 day as the period after
which junk emails are automatically deleted.

I've just check my junk email folder again and see that there are no
junk emails older than yesterday, so either it's started working (I've
been doing lots of rebuilding in recent days), or I emptied my junk
email folder more recently than the day before yesterday - can't
remember now. I'll look again tomorrow and see what's happening.

Thanks. That's something new in 2004 and I'd missed it.

It may be that "1 day" is 24 hours after the first time you checked this box
- i.e. always at a particular time in the day (or the next time you launch
Entourage if it's not open at the scheduled time) - or it may be that it's
pre-set to always be at a particular time of day. I'd guess the first, but
see if you can figure out which it is. And probably "1 day" means "24 hours
PLUS the extra time until the schedule runs" : i.e., if it's only been 22
hours that email has to wait until the next day to be deleted. It might just
be that when you wrote the first time that scheduled hour had not yet
arrived?

Just a follow up. Checked junk mail folder tonight and nothing older
than a day, so must be working okay, if not before, it is now.

Cheers
