automatic entry field

im using access 2002 and im a complete novice. i have a
first name field and a dear field which, for the most part
is the same as the first name. is there a way to make it
automatically pull the first name, but allow for changes?

You bet.

On your input form you could set an event property command
so that when the first name field is entered or changed
(on-update) it triggers a macro that uses a setvalue
function to control the value of the "Dear" field.
Anything you put in this field will be changed if the
first name field is revised, but otherwise you could
override the "calculated" value in the Dear field.
