Automatic Format Rules randomly deleted

I use the automatic formating feature to color code different appointments.

Today, I was looking at the month view. One of my days had more appts than
could be displayed on the date. I clicked on the little yellow down arrow
which Outlook provides when it can't show all the appointments. This
changed the view to a day view. My appointments were all still color coded.
The I deleted two of them. Then I realized that was a mistake and did
Control Z a couple of times, but only one of the appointments came back. So
then I used the drop down list to look in my "deleted items folder" but the
deleted appts were not there. So I switched back to my calendar, and: all 6
of my rules were deleted.

I have created some other views with different color schemes; the rules are
still intact in those views.

This is the third or fourth time in the last couple of months when my rules
have mysteriously disappeared.

I'm using Outlook 2002 (10.4712.4219) SP-2 on Windows XP Pro.

So, does any one have any ideas about:
1) Whether the deleted rules are recoverable?
2) Why the rules keep getting deleted?
3) Where the deleted appointment went?
4) How to get the un-do feature in Outlook to go deeper than 1 iteration
(like in other Microsoft products)

Sigh.
