Automatic Formating of EVERYTHING - even if I don't want it

I am using Office 2004 11.3.8. If I type and then highlight and choose "bold," "italic," change the font or font size, etc., it does it to the whole document. I have gone to Tools - Autocorrect -and have turned off all the automatic formating but it still happens. This is driving me nuts! HELP!!

Everything you write in Word is based on styles, which are sets of
instructions that tell the application which formatting you want to have
applied to a word or a paragraph. Unless you've made any changes, your
entire text is based on a style called "Normal", and you have accidentally
told Word to change every instance of Normal automatically after you've
applied changes to a selection. But don't worry, there's a very easy fix:

click on Format>Style, make sure Normal is selected in the list and hit the
Modify key. Uncheck the Automatically Update checkbox, then return to your
document by clicking on OK/Apply. You should not see this behaviour any
longer.

If you choose Format menu -> Style -> Modify, you¹ll see that ³Automatically
update² is ticked. De-select it and that should solve your problem.

If you¹d like to get rid of all the irritating ³I¹ll do it for you²
features, take a look at page 33 ('To control Word, first dumb it down, then
smarten it up') of some notes on the way I use Word for the Mac, titled
"Bend Word to Your Will", which are available as a free download from the
Word MVPs' website (http://word.mvps.org/Mac/Bend/BendWordToYourWill.html).

[Note: "Bend Word to your will" is designed to be used electronically and
most subjects are self-contained dictionary-style entries. If you decide to
read more widely than the item I've referred to, it's important to read the
front end of the document -- especially pages 3 and 5 -- so you can select
some Word settings that will allow you to use the document effectively.]

Sorry for the delay ‹ we¹re a bit overwhelmed at present... :)

Cheers,
