Automatic formatting

I can't turn off an AutoFormat option--I've unchecked everything. In fact, I don't know what's causing this: When I reformat one paragraph (e.g., change to Bold), Word automatically changes all text below that paragraph to Bold. If I hit the Undo command, then fixes it (leaves the Bold I wanted, restores everything below to what I had previously), but this is extra trouble and sometimes I don't catch it. What is the solution?
