Automatic hyphenation to dash glitch

When I use the auto hyphen formatting feature to convert
two hyphen marks into a dash, the dash overlaps into the
words on either side of it and causes the letters in a
word to its right to be sqeezed together. Any ideas on
how to fix this weird problem?

This is probably a font or printer driver problem.
